چکیده

Critical conditions for the onset of fast interchange dynamics in the stressed geotail during the growth phase of the substorm are derived. We compare the ideal MHD interchange stability conditions (Hurricane, 1997) with kinetically modified interchange– ballooning motions. It is shown that fast interchange growth is possible only in the near–Earth boundary of the plasma sheet where the local plasma pressure is near unity since compressibility stabilizes the high beta geotail. The growth rate is proportional to the local current density and exceeds the ion bounce frequency in the local region of β <∼ 1. Only after sufficient thinning of the current sheet will the kinetic theory growth rate exceed the bounce frequency of the ions which is the effective condition for the substorm MHD–space–time scale unloading of the plasma energy stored in geotail.

A Current Disruption Mechanism in the Neutral Sheet: a Possible Trigger for Substorm Expansions

A linear analysis is performed to investigate he kinetic ross-field streaming instability in the Earth's magnetotail neutral sheet region. Numerical solution of the dispersion equation shows that the instability can occur under conditions expected for the neutral sheet just prior to the onset of substorm expansion. The excited waves are obliquely propagating whistlers with a mixed polarization ...

Relations between multiple auroral streamers, preonset thin arc formation, and substorm auroral onset

[1] Recent ground‐based imager observations have provided evidence of precursor auroral activity leading to substorm auroral onset, where the precursor is initiated by a poleward boundary intensification (PBI) followed by an auroral streamer moving equatorward toward the onset latitude leading to substorm auroral onset. However, since many streamers do not lead to substorms, the question arises...

Substorm classification with the WINDMI model

The results of a genetic algorithm optimization of the WINDMI model using the Blanchard-McPherron substorm data set is presented. A key result from the large-scale computations used to search for convergence in the predictions over the database is the finding that there are three distinct types of vxBs-AL waveforms characterizing substorms. Type I and III substorms are given by the internally-t...

No evidence for externally triggered substorms based on superposed epoch analysis of IMF Bz

[1] Superposed epoch analyses have shown that, on average, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns northward close to substorm onset. This has been commonly accepted as evidence for the substorm onset being triggered by a rapid northward turning of the IMF. Here we show that the tendency arises in any superposed epoch analysis of the IMF in which event onset is biased to occur for southwa...

Seasonal-longitudinal variation of substorm occurrence frequency: Evidence for ionospheric control

[1] Based on 2760 well-defined substorm onsets in the northern hemisphere and 1432 in the southern hemisphere observed by the FUV (Far Ultraviolet) Imager on board IMAGE (Imager for Magnetosphere-to-Aurora Global Exploration) spacecraft, a statistical study is performed for both hemispheres. The main emphasis is put on a possible dependence of the substorm occurrence frequency on season and lon...
